In Conversation: five questions with Jagz Doheley

1. What brought you to work in learning design?

I used to be an in-person regional trainer, which included writing training sessions. While working at Specsavers, I was given a secondment into the learning design team, and I knew I had found my path. I loved the interactivity available and finding innovative solutions to bring different brands and system training to life.

2. What's a trend emerging in learning that you find interesting right now?

I find the intricate world of hybrid learning quite fascinating. I love to see how different organizations tackle this new world, whilst ensuring both in-person and online participants have a fantastic experience. A lot of new trends emerging are linked to the synchronicity of tech and how to help people have seamless experiences when moving from digital to in-person, as well as ensuring the online landscape evokes the feeling of connection and community. The best solutions are when you have two separate people focusing on each experience allowing excellence to flow through both.

3. What do you wish more people understood about learning?

It’s not the first department that should be looked at when streamlining an organization. When learning is put at the heart of the organization, you will see people at all levels flourishing and feeling motivated to pull the company forward. It’s a beautiful world when you are encouraged to explore something you are passionate about.

4. Any book, music, or movie recommendations you’ve been loving lately?

Huberman Lab podcast discusses how our brain and its connections with the organs of our body control our perceptions, our behaviors, and our health. It is filled with tips I use every day. Check out a recent article featuring Huberman Lab here.

I have an eclectic taste in music and have a playlist for every part of my day. It keeps my energy up.

5. What advice would you give to someone just starting their career in learning?

Be curious, find a mentor who is willing to help give you practical knowledge, and keep an eye on upcoming trends in case you can get ahead of the curve and help departments transform learning interventions into something bold, exciting, and memorable.

Thanks again, Jagz, for sharing your thoughts. We love your analysis that learning needs to be at the heart of all departments in an organization, not just the learning team.
